About Us
We have always loved stories. They are an essential part of what makes us human, connects us, and helps us understand our world, ourselves, and others. We started as a small group, meeting regularly to read scenes and plays together, have fun, and just play. At one scene study, we decided to read through The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman and Members of the Tectonic Theater Company. When we finished, we were all moved, emotional, and knew that we couldn’t just leave it there. So in 6 weeks we bought the performance rights, cast the show, rehearsed, identified community partners, and successfully performed a sold-out staged reading in June 2023. That production left us dreaming up ways to continue creating art together in our community and SecondStory Theatre Company was officially born a year later in June 2024!
Why SecondStory? Our rehearsals for The Laramie Project were held in a lounge on the second story of an apartment building. That room was where we created something meaningful together and where we solidified that we wanted to keep creating. Inspired by our production of The Laramie Project, we wanted a name that signified a desire to tell stories that perhaps aren’t always the first to be told, those second stories. And so SecondStory it was!
